- River dragons live on land but spend much of their time in the water. Their boundless energy and constant frolicking cause river dragon scales to fray at the edge, giving them the look of fur. Often found near the Ami'Lya Pond, their splashing creates something akin to a melody; they will occasionally dance to this river song.
- —Nogard's description of the river dragon in The Book of Dragons
River dragons are as well adapted to the water as a penguin. In moments they can disappear into the water and speed away beneath the surface. However, they are fully adapted to land life too and are fast runners.
River dragons are found in almost any river, and may be found in lakes too. Many live in the Ambrosia River, but The Aichpey River is becoming too polluted for them. They also live near the Ami'Lya Pond in the Verulean Highlands and Nes Lake.
River dragons prefer running water to still water, and they prefer to live by the water's edge, in the shelter of forest.
River dragons make large mud dens that look like domes of mud near the water's edge. They can only be accessed through an underground tunnel. The entrance to the tunnel is underwater.
