When first observed, the pyrite dragon was thought to be a gold dragon because of the magnificent luster of its wings and horns. Closer inspection revealed this was a foolish assumption, since the gold dragon is notoriously heavier than its pyrite cousin. Nevertheless, many witches and wizards believe this dragon to bring good fortune to any upon whom the shadow of its flying form falls.
—Nogard's description of the pyrite dragon in The Book of Dragons

The Pyrite Dragon is an epic dragon of the Crystalline element.

Weaknesses

Pyrite dragons are quite heavy for their size, and have weak wings. They have a hard time flying and only fly in dire need. Since they fly so rarely, some wizards say it is an omen of fortune if a flying pyrite dragon's shadow falls upon you. But most of the time the opposite is true, since that likely means the pyrite dragon is fleeing and being followed by something!

Origin of Name

Pyrite dragons get their name from the fact that they are often mistaken for gold dragons by those with no familiarity with either species. Noticing the parallel between this occurrence and the fact that pyrite is often mistaken for gold, wizards took to calling this species pyrite dragons.
