- This dragon is always dressed to the nines, thanks to the gossamer finery of its features. Once a year, the lace dragon renews its flowing lace and the remnants are collected by expert tailors. The resulting robes are some of the most exquisite in DragonVale; witches and wizards from all over bring bags of DragonCash for the privilege to wear them. The lace dragon doesn't seem to mind - after all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
- —Nogard's description of the lace dragon in The Book of Dragons
The scattered population of lace dragons is divided in small groups living near Vinturfjord, the Filigree Falls and The Far North, but recent reports prove that they also live in The Far South. These last two locations may prove that there are flowers on the far poles.
Lace dragons eat plants, mostly flower petals. Flower petals are believed to help lace dragons grow their beautiful lace.
Behavior and Personality
Lace dragons are mostly solitary. However, all lace dragons within an area get together at mating season, and lace dragons will stay with their mate when they are incubating an egg or taking care of a young lace dragon.
Relationship to Wizards
In mating season, male lace dragons shed their lace and put it on display. Females will go around and decide which dragon she thinks has the most beautiful lace. The male she chooses will become mates with the female. The male's lace is discarded after mating, leaving it free for the wizards to collect. Lace dragons only remain mates while the infant lace dragon is with its parents. Next mating season, courtship rituals start all over again, and the two lace dragons will find a new mate all over again.
Lace dragons will find a small, enclosed area, for example a cave, for the nest to be. The female will shed her lace and make a nest with it to lay her egg in. Male and female take turns foraging for food and sitting on the egg.
When a baby lace dragon hatches, its first meal is the lace nest. Baby lace dragons eat their nest because they cannot eat flower petals at first and need a boost on their lace growing. Lace dragons are able to walk and fly from birth, and immediately follow their parents out of the nest area. However, while a lace dragon is young, it will keep close by its parents.
